Hardwood Gates East Yorkshire

Why choose hardwood for your driveway gates or side gates?

Certain species of hardwoods will last for decades even if left untreated, to name just three:

Sapele

An african grown hardwood, sapele is rugged due to its crossed grain making it stable and ideal for external projects as well as internal doors and even furniture due to its mahogany like appearance. It cleans up and sands beautifully. We use it for our driveway gates, side gates and external doors including garage doors and have even used it for windows, once treated sapele maintains its rich and luxurious appearance for years. Left untreated sapele, in time turns a stunning shade of grey while still remaining stable in our changing climate.

Iroko

Another african grown species is quite a dry oily timber, great to work with other than the fine dust it creates covering everything in the workshop (ha ha!!),

We also use this for our driveway gates, side gates and garage doors much the same a s sapele but iroko has a stunning rich golden apperance. Again, we use this to create the luxurious ranges. Turns grey again over the years if left untreated.

European Oak

Back to england now for a much loved and widely admired hardwood,
a lot of oak although sourced as european oak is actally english oak born and bred. I think everyone knows about oak as many old heritage buildings utilise oak somewhere in their construction whether it be a porch entrance or even the gates that have welcomed thousands of people for a hundred years.

As with all of the timber we love and respect oak and have used it for a multitude of purposes including our driveway gates and garage doors.

You may have heard of the fsc or seen it tagged on to timber somewhere, who are they?

They are the forestry stewardship council and were set up in the early to mid 90,s when it became frighteingly clear that we were destroying too much of our forestry causing devastating losses to our wildlife and of course compromising the filtration of the very air that we breathe, neither of which are acceptable on any scale, the fsc are responsible for ensuring that timber as a resource is well sustained hence the phrase (sustainable timber), more serious an issue than you might think.

There are a number of hardwoods that can be responsibly sought and we are aware of most however we quickly check before we quote on certain requested species to ensure that we do not use anything which is not sourced responsibly.there is the iucn list which is by the international union for the conservation of nature who monitor and list the species under most threat, our suppliers are aware of this and carefully only source their timbers responsibly, this is a conversation that we have regularly with our suppliers as we order.not all species that are on the list are under threat of extinction, it means more that they are in limited supply as their numbers grow back in to sustainability so if you order from us now for a job in 3-4 months say, and we quote you on a specific hardwood, we will source yours immediately to ensure that we can honour our quotes.
